South Point – Lindsay Thomas ’96

South West WA was the scene of a horrific tragedy in September ’96 when a group of kids on a school surfing sports day were killed when the sandstone caves at South Point they were sitting in collapsed with 30 tonnes of rock. The caves is where everyone who surfed here would hang out from the elements. One of those killed was Margret River legend Lindsay Thomas who was a well known figure in the surfing community as well as owning the main surf shop in Margrets. Id met Lindsay quite a few years early at an Aussie Title in South Oz when we went on a boozy night out that still is very hazy. A few weeks before the tragedy I caught up with Lindsay at his shop and reminiced about that night. The photo below of South Point was taken from the caves you can see in the left of the shot during that same trip. It was one of those freak accidents that could have happened at anytime unfortunaetly the surfing world lost a true good bloke.
